The INB Environment Policy is an institutional commitment not only to its employees but also to the society and the environment. While preserving nature in the relevant areas, INB has been developing its activities, contributing to the Country's development and complying with the strictest environmental control standards applied to the industry. INB maintains, in all its units, areas of environmental preservation, recovery and control.

All activities developed in the company are followed-up and inspected by the environmental sector regulating authorities and by the Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear - CNEN (Brazilian nuclear regulatory authority) - the latter participating in relation to radiological protection procedures and licensing.

This is how INB, along its existence, has been proving the perfect feasibility of a harmonious coexistence between nuclear activities and the environment.

INB Resende
Zoobotanic Center

The perfect synthesis of INB environmental policy, the Zoobotanic Center is its best example and is located at the Nuclear Fuel Factory in the municipality of Resende, South of Rio de Janeiro State.

The major purpose of this Center is the creation of an environmental culture. It concentrates zoobotanic knowledge, data and researches on biodiversity in the unit area: 6 million square meters in the region of Middle Paraíba.

The Atlantic Forest is extremely degraded in this region due to predatory actions such as cutting of the original vegetation for coal production, coffee planting and eradication pasture farms, industrialization and erratic urban development. However, the forest still has a significant biodiversity, worth object of studies enabling not only the preservation of the remainder flora and fauna, but also the protection of water sources, among them the Paraíba do Sul River, which borders INB for 25 kms.

In compliance with its various areas of studies, it has the following sectors:
  • Biology lab;
  • Herbarium;
  • Insectarium;
  • Seed bank;
  • Nursery for production of native, fruit and medicinal seedlings;
  • Reforestation and recovery of historically degraded areas;
  • Wildlife screening center.
  • Environmental education and ecological awareness for employees, visitors and students of the Middle Paraíba region;
  • Professional formation for trainees in biology, agronomy and veterinary graduate courses;
  • Development of works oriented by consultants aiming at initiation programs and scientific research of natural resources;
  • Inventories of the remaining forest, of water bodies and micro and macro fauna, and,
  • Refloresting projects to shelter the regional fauna.
The Zoobotanic Center has achieved unparalleled results in its research and it already has an impressive databank: more than 1,000 regional flora exsiccates, 85 different bird species, 260 insects of 10 classes, 9 species of ophidian, 15 species of anurans - in this particular case, two rarities were found - 19 species of mammals, 3 species of bats, 1 species of scorpion, 5 species of spiders, 1 species of reptile and 12 species of fishes.

Approximately 2.875 animals of the most varied species have already been through the Wildlife Screening Center.

INB Caldas

The INB Caldas unit, in Caldas, South of Minas Gerais State, carries out a full environment survey (water, air, soil, vegetation and wildlife) in order to maintain its influence areas and surroundings under strict control. The Minas Gerais Forest Institute has declared the area a private wildlife sanctuary - 70% of its facilities are fields, forests remaining from previous deforestations and lagoons. From the beginning of its operation, control actions have been taken to minimize environmental impacts. The reintegration and stabilization of the pollution potential of these areas were made by the development of an Environment Protection and Control Program.

This unit has a tree nursery, a vegetable garden, nursery of native plant seedlings and carries out works in environmental education, preservation and recovery.

INB Caetité

Major local environment projects are underway at INB Caetité, in Southeast Bahia: forest tree nursery with native and medicinal seedlings, reforestation and re-composition of an 800 hectare area owned by the company - there is a forecast of planting of five million native regional cuttings in five years - and environment education with activities geared to schools and associations, besides support to recycling and use of alternative materials.

INB Buena

In Buena, in the Municipality of São Francisco de Itabapoana, North of Rio de Janeiro State, the INB Buena Unit carries out mining works and physical processing of heavy minerals. The environment impact resulting from these activities is routinely evaluated and controlled by a Mined Areas Recovery Program and by monitoring the environment at the work sites surrounding the mining fronts and the processing facilities. Mining activities and re-composition of the area are concurrently performed so that the full recovery of mined lands is immediately completed after the end of ore extraction process. This way, we have reached our main goal, namely, the prompt return of these areas to their original activities - farming and cattle-raising.
