The Canadian environmentalist Patrick Moore, one of the Greenpeace founders affirmed yesterday (November 18th) in Rio de Janeiro that nuclear energy is the best option for the world’s future. “The nuclear energy is not that evil source that the majority of activists say to be. It can free us from environmental pollution so that we have a clean atmosphere.
In a conference in Rio de Janeiro, one of Greenpeace founders affirms that it is necessary to quadruplicate the number of nuclear plants in the world.
The uranium on Caetité, Ceará, exists for more than 500 million years. Through this period of time series of geological processes happened, which resulted in dispersion of different minerals volumes throughout the area. Uranium presents small solubility, therefore the superficial and surface waters in contact with the mineral absorb part of this material.
Greenpeace, is his alarmist habitual tone, publicized the report “Danger Cycle – Impacts of Brazilian Nuclear Fuel Production”, with their characteristic action apparatus, first with an extensive report on Rede Record TV journal (10/15/08) and on the following day with a collective interview to the main Brazilian medias about the same subject.
Besides the production of the thousandth EC, 6th Angra 2 recharge includes new acquired equipment by INB – about 15 million Brazilian reais invested – on nuclear fuel production line. Modernizing the FCN structure and providing state-of-the-art equipment is a concern of INB directory. “These new equipments eliminate old production bottlenecks, improve operational security, guarantee goals achievement and reduce the production cost”, the superintendent guarantees.
Brazilian Nuclear Industries (INB) receives in the beginning of 2008 (January 3rd ) the uranium hexafluoride loading (UF6) from Holland and Germany for the 6th Angra 2 fuel recharge. At the Nuclear Fuel Factory (FCN) – Resende/RJ –the further steps of fuel cycle will be performed: Reconversion – making gas into dust – pellet manufacturing and assembling element fuel. In its totality, INB received 21 UF6 cylinders (20 enrichment on 4% degree and another 4.4%). Totalizing approximately 45 hexafluoride tons.
Brazilian Nuclear Industries (INB) started the production of the 6th Angra 2 recharge when the thousandth Fuel Element on Nuclear Fuel Factory (FCN) will be produced in Resende/RJ. The FCN machining team works in this production since October. Enriched uranium gas (UF6) arrived in Brazil in early January and was sent to Reconversion factories – making gas into dust – and UO2 Pellet factories.
Angra 3 is the first Brazilian nuclear generation project designed to be lucrative. Angra 1 and 2 did not have this mission because they incorporated the owning and technology development costs in this segment, explains Iukio Ogawa, superintendent from Licensing and Environmental of Eletronuclear, an Eletrobrás company responsible to build and operate thermonuclear plants on Brazil.
Brazil has the 6th major world reserve of uranium and is one of the three countries that dominate all nuclear cycle. That is why Brazil cannot abandon nuclear energy if it wants to guarantee energetic fulfillment necessary for economic growth and population consumption.
Nuclear plant Angra 1 (RJ, 650 MW) returned to the National Integrated System (SIN) this Friday afternoon (August 3rd). The unit had been disconnected from SIN on June 2nd for the refueling of about one third of the nuclear fuel. During downtime, tests were made on the current vapor generators.
The company will guarantee 100% of Angra 1, 2 and 3 plants’ uranium need.
Itatiaia, the second Brazilian major uranium and phosphate mine can make viable the reactivation of Angra 3 nuclear plant.
